Pope Leo XIV will begin using a new electric Popemobile, a custom Mercedes-Benz G-Class, ordered back in 2024 for then-Pope Francis.
The vehicle was delivered in December and has only seen a few months of use. Based on the G 580 with EQ Technology model, the luxury SUV was handcrafted by Mercedes teams in Germany and Italy, with an estimated value of around USD 160,400.
Among the exclusive features added to the Popemobile are a central seat with adjustable height, a special cover for rainy days, and a rear door adapted for easier access — especially useful when the pope used a wheelchair.
The pearl-effect paint provides a touch of elegance without excess, while the traditional SCV 1 plate reaffirms the vehicle’s identity as an official Vatican car.
With four electric motors, one for each wheel, the G-Class delivers 587 hp and can reach 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, although that speed is unlikely to be used. The range reaches 473 km, with zero emissions.
The choice of an electric model is part of the Vatican’s plan to make its fleet fully sustainable by 2030, which already includes other electric vehicles such as the Volkswagen ID.3 for official duties.
